Nearly 30 years after Times Beach, Mo., was evacuated in one of the nation's most notorious environmental disasters, scientists with the Environmental Protection Agency are returning to the site for a new round of soil sampling.
The Columbia Public School district will receive about $400,000 less funding from the state next year compared to the previous year. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, or DESE, announced its preliminary allocation plan last week. The estimation is based on the state foundation formula. DESE’s spokesperson Sarah Potter says the state doesn’t have enough money to keep up with the foundation formula, which has been in effect for six years.
An annual report released Friday by the attorney general found black drivers were 72 percent more likely than white motorists to be pulled over in 2011. Black drivers were stopped 2.5 times more often than Hispanic drivers.
The report compares racial characteristics of Missouri's driving-age population to the racial composition of drivers in the roughly 1.7 million traffic stops, 129,000 searches and 81,000 arrests.
