KBIA News brings you a four-part series about problems with Columbia's stormwater infrastructure.

Tom WellmanIn part one, a report about the city's stormwater infrastructure reveals a system that is underfunded and under-equipped. Listen

(Left: Tom Wellman, an engineering specialist for the Stormwater Management Department, analyzes footage of storm drains on Meadowlark Lane in southeast Columbia.)

Part two: foundation problems, drainage issues, and flooding are not unusual in some areas of Columbia.  All the problems are at least in part related to the city's aging stormwater system. Listen

Part three: the city has adopted new regulations and added a stormwater manual.  The additional restrictions are causing some developers to reconsider building in Columbia. Listen

In the final part of our series, residents could just be starting to feel the effect of Columbia's failing stormwater infrastructure. Officials say a major tax increase will be necessary to update the system. Listen

Video extra: Tom Wellman reviews footage from May 30, 2007 of a corrugated metal pipe located under Meadowlark Avenue in southeast Columbia. Corrugated metal pipe has a life expectancy of 30-40 years and these particular pipes are of primary concern to the city’s storm water engineers.
