Gov. Jay Nixon is traveling the state to survey damage from Missouri's hot, dry summer.
Nixon planned to meet with farmers and local officials Tuesday in Lewis County in northeast Missouri, in Atchison County in northwest Missouri and in Polk County in southwest Missouri. The governor is to be joined by the state's agriculture director.
St. Louis-based Ameren Missouri presented details of its energy efficiency plan to the Missouri Public Service Commission on Monday. The proposal would cost around $145 million, which would result in the average home electric bill going up about $3 per month. Ameren officials say, though, the plan would result in long-term savings of nearly half a billion dollars. Kevin Gunn chairs the Public Service Commission, which heard the utility’s presentation in Jefferson City.
Gov. Jay Nixon is building a big bank account for his re-election campaign.Finance figures released Monday show Nixon raised $2.1 million from April through June and had $7.6 million in his account at the start of July.
Nixon's campaign said it was his strongest fundraising quarter this election cycle and that his bank account is twice as large as it was at a similar point in July 2008.
Columbia Head Start officials are searching today for a new home for 20 students displaced after a fire caused an estimated $50,000 worth of damage to the Head Start preschool on Worley Street. The fire broke out Sunday evening around 6.
Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach said the cause of the fire was in the electrical disconnect to the air conditioner. When crews arrived on the scene, fire was coming out of the building. Crews found a fire in the basement that extended to the attic through a wall.

The University of Missouri System announced in May it would be eliminating the University of Missouri Press, and that process officially started July 1st. Today, the University of Missouri-Columbia campus issued the press release below, announcing a new model to serve similar goals of the ill-fated Press.
