The Columbia City Council approved a proposal from Mayor Bob McDavid to create a taskforce to look at youth crimes in the city by a vote of six in favor to none against. Councilmember Ian Thomas did not attend the meeting.
The Callaway Energy Center near Fulton remains closed after a small fire in the turbine building.
Ameren Missouri says that workers have been performing tests and repairing damage from a small fire Friday night. The fire was in the "non-nuclear" power-generation side of the Callaway County nuclear facility. An Ameren spokesman says cables that connect the plant to the electric grid shorted, causing nearby insulation to catch fire.
An earlier press release said the center is "out of service in accordance with safety protocols and procedures."
Starting today, a number of Boone County roads are undergoing construction. Lake of the Woods Road is closed at the intersection with St. Charles Road and is scheduled to reopen on August 5. Rangeline Road is down to one lane between Richland Road and Highway WW so the road can receive a new fog seal treatment. Rangeline is set to reopen to full traffic by Friday.
The University of Missouri will be conducting a drill Monday morning at its research nuclear reactor center. The center is located south of Stadium Boulevard and west of Providence Road in Columbia. The drill is meant to simulate what could happen during an emergency situation at the reactor.
After months of campaigning, members of the Boone County Office of Emergency Management were finally able to celebrate after Proposition 1 passed with a majority. Supporters filled Bleu Restaurant and Wine Bar all night as the votes came in. The proposition will increase the sales tax in Boone County by 3/8’s of a cent and the money collected will go towards upgrades for 911 emergency communication services. Operations Manager at the Office of Emergency Management Joe Piper was so stunned by the victory he was speechless.
