Alabama fans roll into town for MU vs. Alabama football game
Columbia will host its third Southeastern Conference MU football game this weekend against the top ranked University of Alabama.
KBIA’s Paige Travis says Jefferson City is expecting an influx of business this weekend to accommodate the out-of state fans.
Hotels started filling up several weeks ago in Jefferson City and Ryan Winkler, the spokesperson for the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau says the Capitol has also seen an increase in business for restaurants, bars and hotels in the area. She says the out-of-town overflow for the MU home games is raising awareness for Jefferson City as a family friendly option for visitors to travel to outside of the football games.
“Everyone’s sort of just been thrown into this and the business owners and the hotels, everyone is just doing the best that they can to accommodate the increase in traffic and give these travels a positive experience so that they’ll come back,” Winkler says.
Winkler also says SEC fans have shown an interest in city tours and historical attractions at the state capitol. In September for the Georgia game, hotels were booked within a 50-mile radius of Columbia. Winkler says the city is expecting similar numbers this weekend for the Alabama game.
