Board of Education Approves Members of Lee Elementary Naming Committee

The Columbia Public School District Board of Education voted to approve members of the Lee Elementary naming committee Thursday morning. The committee will be responsible for considering the school’s official name, Robert E. Lee Elementary School.

Columbia Public Schools Community Relations Director Michelle Baumstark said community diversity is strong within the committee.

“We have a cross-section, and we have diverse representation on the committee. We have several at-large members, we have requested members from the four basic quadrants of our community. We have parents, we have business representation, and we have student representation on that committee,” Baumstark said.

The committee was chosen at random from a list of submitted names. Board of Education member Jonathan Sessions said once the committee is assembled, the process can move forward.

“The next steps are for that board to meet and put together that process. Obviously that committee is that committee, they will be making a recommendation to the Board of Education once they finish that work. There is not a specific timeline.”

The public will have the opportunity to submit suggestions and ideas, which the committee will use to create recommendations for the Board of Education.
