Bread Basket Cafe will close after 20 years of serving Columbia

Bread Basket Cafe II, located on 8th Street and Elm, will be closing its doors on Saturday, December 13.

News of BBC II's closing was met with surprise and sadness from staff and regulars at the restaurant, including Server Taylor Baker.

"I am so sad. Not only is it a great place to hang out, we have kind of become a family here and even the regulars too," Baker said. "It is definitely one of my favorite places to be."

Baker said she was called in late last week for the announcement, but not given much more detail other than the date.

Owner David Maxwell said the restaurant will be closing because he sold the space. He wouldn't comment on who bought the building or what the buyers will be doing with it.

The restaurant and bar has a long history in Columbia. The Bread Basket Café originally opened in 1994 at the Crossroads Shopping Center, later opening a second location on 8th street. The Crossroads location closed Christmas Eve 2012, so this is the first time BBC will be closing for good.

"Here we've owned the building, we've found another tenant who we wanted to lease it to earlier, and this is the first time we have officially just closed," Maxwell said.

Maxwell said he has no plans to open another BBC location.
