Callaway nuclear power plant back online after fire
After weeks of being out of commission, Ameren's Callaway nuclear energy plant is back in service.
The plant has been offline since July 26th after a fire in the "non-nuclear" part of the plant led to a shutdown in accordance with safety procedures.
In a press release, Ameren said the electrical arc that created a fire was "caused by a ventilation louver that had dislodged and came in close proximity to the electrical cables."
The Callaway Energy Center generates about 20 percent of the electricity supplied to Ameren Missouri’s 1.2 million customers. Other power plants in the system kept Ameren's 1.2 million customers online while Callaway Energy Center was down. When online, the plant generates about 20% of the electricity in Ameren's grid.
