Michele Nix started her position Thursday as Columbia’s new finance director. She succeeds John Blattel, who held the position for nearly four years. Before Blattel retires on Friday, he plans to show Nix the ropes as finance director.

According to a press release, Nix has been a Columbia resident since 1997 and is excited to work for the city.

Nix was most recently the chief financial officer at MOSERS - the Missouri State Retirement System. City Manager Mike Matthes said her expertise in pensions is a valuable asset for Columbia.

“One of the things that every government got surprised by in the recession was just how weak the pension funding was across the country and we have that same issue,” Matthes said. “It’s really good to have someone with that level of knowledge join the organization.”

In addition to her past work in pensions, Nix holds a CPA. Matthes said her ability to manage individuals in an emotionally intelligent way is another reason for the city’s selection.

A public meet and greet is scheduled for Monday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in conference rooms 1A and 1B at City Hall. Nix will be sworn in at the City Council meeting on Monday at 7 p.m.
