Columbia city staff plans to ask council members to delay voting on a partial ban on single-use plastic shopping bags.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that the council is set to discuss the ordinance at its March 2nd meeting. But Deputy City Manager Tony St. Romaine says the city's staff plans to ask council members to instead table the ordinance for at least a year or withdraw it altogether.
St. Romaine says the delay is being sought because Columbia residents haven't had much time to learn about the proposed rule. He also noted that no one on the city council represents Columbia's First Ward since Ginny Chadwick resigned in January.
Ban backers argue it would protect the environment, while opponents say it would go too far.
