Columbia to Assess Proposal of Transit System

A transit task force is preparing to meet next week to discuss restructuring Columbia’s bus system.

By Alexandra Olgin (Columbia, Mo.)

Columbia Mayor Bob McDavid’s idea is modeled after other college towns that use student activities fees to subsidize the bus system. Third Ward Council Representative Gary Kespohl says the mayor’s proposal would help balance out the cost to riders.

“We see a lot of inequity with buses going to apartment complexes. In some cases contracts those apartment complexes had with the city the students are riding for as little as 15 cents a ride,” said Kesphol.

Kespohl also  says the proposed increased student activity fee would be less than the fast pass students buy now to get unlimited trips.
