Columbia's Faith, Community Leaders Join Efforts to Raise Money to Fight Poverty

For the first time in almost 20 years, elected officials and members of the faith community came together for fellowship and to raise money for an organization devoted to combating poverty.

More than 50 churches were represented at the Boone County Community Prayer Breakfast on Thursday morning. Fred Parry, the prayer breakfast’s coordinator, said the idea was to bring together members of the faith community.

“One of the things we discovered is that we don’t have a cohesive faith community,” Parry said. “So, really the idea here was to sort of bring the faith community together and try to get everyone in the same room and basically just pray for our community and talk about ways we could make life better for people here in Columbia.”

One way that was discussed was participating in the ForColumbia Initiative. ForColumbia’s Warren Mayer said from 2014 to 2018 the initiative grew from 11 churches to 55 and went from having 750 volunteers to having 2,300 volunteers.
