On 'corporate' farming

Peggy Lowe
/
Harvest Public Media

On this week's show, we’ll hear the fourth installment of Harvest Public Media’s Farmer of the future series, and hear about the bacteria that live in and on our bodies.

Who is the farmer of the future?

That’s the question being posed by Harvest Public Media in a five part series that explores how demographic, technological and cultural forces will shape America’s food producers into the next decade and beyond.
Agriculture is a big business fueled by big businesses. But farmers themselves still come in many sizes. In part four of the series, Peggy Lowe asks: who are you calling a corporate farmer?

And, researchers have completed the first comprehensive census of the human “microbiome” — in other words, the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that live in and on our bodies. As St. Louis Public Radio’s Véronique LaCapra reports, researchers will now be able to use this vast database to study the role microbes play in human disease.
