Council Continues to Debate Merit of Full or Partial Audits of City Finances

Multiple Columbia City Council members expressed concerns about the cost of a proposed audit of the city’s finances at Monday’s meeting, but they will continue to discuss the issue.

The council initially expressed support for a comprehensive audit at its March 5 meeting but paused when the Missouri State Auditor’s Office estimated the cost at $500,000 to $750,000, and perhaps more, according to a council memo.

“It’s just too much money,” Third Ward Councilman Karl Skala said at Monday’s meeting.

Skala said he was concerned that an comprehensive audit of the city’s finances would take multiple years, which would put a damper on a number of other activities proposed by the city.
