Digest this: The messages and motives behind farm and food controversies

Watch the show and join the conversation on the Intersection website.

If you’re a typical consumer, you might not really know the details of how your food is produced. And no wonder, with all the competing messages surrounding food and farming today, it’s often difficult to know what’s fact, fiction, or exaggeration.

This can also be a big problem for the farmers and ranchers who create America’s food supply. Public perceptions are increasingly influencing the way they produce the food we eat.

So how do consumers make decisions about what they consume? And, how are the various stakeholders attempting to shape those thoughts about food? Host Reuben Stern spoke with four experts with diverse views about the messages and motives behind these controversies in this special Intersection event, recorded on Friday, March 16, at Broadway Brewery & Restaurant in Columbia, Mo. This program is a collaboration with Harvest Public Media; The University of Missouri's Mizzou Advantage and the Food Dialogue Center.

Panelists:

Mike Adams, host of the syndicated programAgriTalk

Chris Chinn, fifth generation family farmer

Bruce Friedrich, senior director for strategic initiatives at Farm Sanctuary

Wes Jamison, associate professor of communication, Palm Beach Atlantic University

Rehman Tungekar is a former producer for KBIA, who left at the beginning of 2014.
