Election Night 2016: Mid-Missouri Reacts to Presidential Results

Sarah Kellogg

Residents all over the state of Missouri cast their ballot for the next president on Tuesday. In what’s been called one of the most polarizing elections in history, Residents at watch parties in Columbia and Jefferson City talked to KBIA reporters about their reactions to Donald Trump winning the presidency.

“It’s been a really divisive race and I think, I feel strongly that Hillary Clinton could’ve at least moved us past it. I don’t feel that Donald Trump can do that. I’m not terribly eloquent, but I feel like he is a fascist. And not to be super inflammatory, but maybe like we won’t even be voting next time.” - Carry Bruce

“I think the thing I would be most excited for is…I know it seems a little outlandish, but honestly a sense of healing and I know that the counter argument to that is ‘Well no, that’s not going to happen, it’s Trump.’ But, I think that we saw a different Donald Trump in the third debate and I think that if that Donald Trump comes to be president that there could be a sense of healing.”- David Bader

“As an Afro-Puerto Rican, Venezuelan, American and an openly gay man, I just see it as a step back of time. I just see it as we’re not progressing, we’re actually regressing.” - Kendall Martinez-Wright

“Here at Mizzou, most of my friends are Hillary Clinton supporters, but back home, like my family and stuff, they’re huge Donald Trump supporters because I’m from a very conservative area. So it’s just, just hearing everybody go at each other is hard and I honestly cannot wait for this election to be over.” - Kara Hughes.

“I’m here tonight to celebrate the win by our Cole County Republicans, and our state Republicans and our president.” - Carla Brandes

“I am absolutely shocked. I am beyond words. I have no words to express my feelings because I’m surprised, I’m disappointed, I’m sad, I’m angry. I mean there are just so many emotions, so many things that are coming in my mind right now.” - Carolyn Magnuson

“I’m feeling pretty somber. I’m a little bit disappointed in our country. I don’t know. I don’t know how to put it in words to be quite honest.” - Joseph Brown

“What I’m worried about is, the country gets in this huge debate over, ‘Well, our candidate should have won. This candidate should have won. The election’s rigged, or whatever, you know, words Donald Trump has thrown around a lot. Regardless of who wins, the country needs to be focused on our issues to the future. We need to look to the future and we need to work on making our country the country we want it to be.” - Robert Bohnak
