Evangel Announced $4 million Budget Cut, 44 Job Reductions

Evangel University of Springfield says it plans to reduce spending by $4 million and cut 44 faculty and staff jobs.

The university announced Wednesday that it is restructuring in response to declining enrollment. The changes will not include dropping any major academic programs, although underused majors, such as Bible languages, will no longer be offered.

The Springfield News-Leader the job losses include 32 faculty and staff who have accepted retirement buyout offers and 12 who were told Wednesday that their jobs have been eliminated.

Evangel President Carol Taylor says the $4 million reductions represent 10 percent of the college's annual budget. She said the alternative to the cuts would have been a 12 percent increase in tuition.

The university will impose a 3 percent tuition increase next academic year.
