Ferguson Officials Face Criticism Over Open Records Fees

Ferguson officials are facing criticism for the fees they’re seeking for open-records requests.

The St. Louis suburb has been flooded with those requests since the shooting of Michael Brown in August.

Officials are charging thousands of dollars for some of those requests, which has sparked criticism from outlets including the Associated Press.

Ferguson City Attorney Stephanie Karr has defended the fees, saying she often worked until midnight trying to keep up with requests from media, bloggers, activists and residents.

She says the fees were instituted a few weeks after the shooting, and they are allowed under state law.

The city was once again the scene of protests after a Department of Justice investigation reported racial bias in Ferguson’s policing.

During one protest Wednesday night, two police officers were wounded by a gunman who protesters say was not an activist.

That report also led one municipal court judge to resign.

The Associated Press is one of the largest and most trusted sources of independent newsgathering, supplying a steady stream of news to its members, international subscribers and commercial customers. AP is neither privately owned nor government-funded; instead, it's a not-for-profit news cooperative owned by its American newspaper and broadcast members.
