This summer, the United States Supreme Court will make a decision on whether to legalize same-sex marriage. But some countries in Latin America have already done that, with Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay being three that have made gay marriage legal. In this edition of Global Journalist, we look at gay rights in the region, and how some countries are actually going backwards in terms of gay rights.

This week's guests:

  • Elisabeth Jay Friedman, a professor of politics and the director of Latin American studies at the University of San Francisco. She’s also the author of “Unfinished Transitions: Women and the Gendered Development of Democracy in Venezuela.”
  • Annecka Marshall, a lecturer in the Institute for Gender and Development Studies at the University of the West Indies
  • Rosario Monteverde, director of GPS Gay, a social media website for LGBT people with more than 200,000 users
