Increased Tuition at MU May Hurt Diversity, New Study Says

MU has taken a number of measures in the past to bolster diversity on campus. But, this week, the UM System took a step that might negatively impact the effort.

According to a 2018 peer-reviewed study, increases in tuition in two- and four-year universities can lead to a decrease in diversity on campus. On Monday, the UM System Board of Curators voted to increase tuition beginning this fall.

MU administrators, however, are not worried that this will affect diversity on campus, and data shows diversity has been steadily increasing at MU.

“Missouri has done a very good job at keeping prices low, which is relative, but it depends on financial circumstances,” university spokesman Christian Basi said.
