Jefferson City business leaders prepare for future

Jefferson City has seen some improvements from its chamber of commerce since it underwent structural changes in September 2013.

The chamber wanted to narrow its focus on four areas: talent, growth, place and membership.

The chamber’s president and CEO Randy Allen said the chamber has been able to develop the workforce in the city.

“We’ve been working pretty hard on a couple particular areas and that is trying to retain some young people and then getting the new people to the companies connected to the community,” Allen said.

Chairman Bob Gilbert said the implementation of the Jeff City INSIGHT program will showcase aspects of the city to new workers.

"It's a new program that chamber members can take advantage of to help their new employees to the area get a little more oriented to Jefferson City," Gilbert said.

Gilbert is confident in the program's ability to retain talented employees. He says he has also seen an increase in the level of interest from prospective companies.

Allen said the work to improve the economy is not over.

"One of the things we have to work on constantly here is trying to figure out how that economy is changing and how to adapt to that," Allen said.

Gilbert said the chamber is currently striving to attract more sporting events to the city.

"We have been facilitating some discussions about creating a multipurpose center with the Parks and Recreation department and with other potential partners like Special Olympics of Missouri," Gilbert said.

Both Gilbert and Allen said the end result is to have a workforce whose abilities fit the current jobs.
