The Jefferson City Council will discuss ideas on June 30 that could improve the city's transit system.

Currently the system runs Monday through Friday and from 6:40 am to 5:45 pm.  Business owners and members of Citizens for Jefftran spoke at the city council meeting on Monday night.

These people want to create a bus system that runs later at night and on weekends according to City Administrator Steve Crowell.

"I think that the discussion is important and I think it's good to have the citizen engagement that was there," Crowell said.

Councilman Ken Hussey agreed and says citizens of Jefferson City are doing a good job of putting the transit system's issues out in the open.

"The people from Jefftran have done a really good job of elevating this issue and ensuring that it stands in front of the council," Councilman Ken Hussey said.

Hussey said the only problem in making the improvements for the bus system would be finding a way to pay for it.  He said bus user fees currently account for only 10% of the money it takes to run the system.
