Joplin residents file complaints about mail delivery changes

Some Joplin residents and postal service workers are upset with changes in mail delivery in sections of Joplin hardest hit by last year's tornado.

The U.S. Postal Service eliminated door or porch delivery in the part of the tornado disaster zone where expedited debris removal occurred. Instead, it has installed curbside or neighborhood collection boxes, which provide centralized sites for delivery.

A decision has not been made about mail delivery in the parts of the disaster area where houses were damaged but not destroyed.

The Joplin Globe reports that a union for letter carriers has filed a grievance over the change.

City officials said they granted permission only for temporary cluster mailboxes, not a permanent change in delivery. But postal officials say it's their decision, not the city's.
