KBIA is one of the five small newsroom finalists in the general excellence category in the 2016 Online News Association's Online Journalism Awards.
KBIA's entry included special projects like Here Say, Access Missouri, Mizzou at a Crossroads and An Uncertain Road: Life After Premature Birth.
This is the second time KBIA has been a finalist in the Online Journalism Awards competition, after a win in the general excellence category last year. The general excellence category, "honors an ongoing publication/app that successfully fulfills its editorial mission, effectively serves its audience, maximizes the use of digital tools and platforms, and represents the highest journalistic standards. Entries will be judged on quality of journalism, use of social tools, creative use of the medium and platform, user interface and interactivity."
This is the latest honor in a very fruitful awards season for KBIA. In the last year of competitions, KBIA has also won:
- 1 national Edward R. Murrow Award
- 5 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards
- 2 national Sigma Delta Chi Awards
- 2 national first place PRNDI awards
- 4 first place and 1 honorable mention awards from the Missouri Broadcasters Association
- 3 first place and 3 finalists in the Mark of Excellence Awards
- 16 awards from the Kansas City Press Club Heart of America Awards
