Local Governments Closer to Disaster Aid Funds

Local governments in Missouri could be one step closer to more than 100 million dollars in federal aid for storm shelters.

Those governments would be getting reimbursed for building the shelters as well as repairing critical facilities after disasters.

The Missouri Senate Appropriations Committee today approved giving 124 million dollars more in federal funds for those reimbursements.

That move was prompted in part by the damage the Joplin tornado did in 2011.

Cities and towns have been waiting on that added money to pay for some 30 million dollars in already-completed projects.

The proposal also includes 5 million dollar in matching general revenue from the state, and 3.5 million dollars for future emergencies.

That would replenish funds spent on the state’s response to unrest in Ferguson, among other things.

The measure will now go to the full senate.
