Mark McIntosh has been named interim vice chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies and Economic Development, effective immediately.

The announcement came Wednesday morning from University of Missouri Interim Chancellor Hank Foley, who vacated the position upon being appointed Chancellor last week.

In an email to faculty, staff and students this morning, Foley wrote that he has the “utmost confidence in Mark.”

McIntosh says that he and Foley have been working together for the past eight months on several projects related to research opportunities for graduate students. He says that the preparation will allow the transition to go smoothly.

“It’s going to be a continuation and I hope an enhancement of some of the efforts that Dr. Foley has already started here,” McIntosh said. “Hopefully with him in his new role as chancellor, we’ll have a significant amount of support to continue to try to grow our research reputation around the country and our opportunities for graduate education.”

McIntosh is most excited about growing the university’s research infrastructure.

“We have invested strategically over the last few months and will continue to invest strategically in recruiting new faculty and purchasing new technologies and instrumentation and recruiting top notch graduate students," he said.

McIntosh began his career at MU more than 30 years ago, and has served as director of graduate studies in the department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology for 14 years. He is also the associate vice chancellor for Research and Strategic Initiatives.

“We have a lot of work in front of us,” McIntosh said. “We are a highly respected institution with a very strong academic record, and we have a lot of opportunity to improve and to make the people of Missouri proud of their flagship institution.”
