The family of Caleb Schwab has made arrangements for his memorial service.
Ten-year-old Schwab died Sunday riding the Verrückt waterslide at Schlitterbahn in Kansas City, Kansas. He was the son of Kansas state representative Scott Schwab.
A visitation will be held at Life Mission Church in Olathe from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening. A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
Clint Sprague, the pastor at Life Mission church, spoke to reporters on behalf of the family.
“This has been devastating, it has been devastating at every level. You know you leave church you go to a waterpark to be with family and to enjoy and then you hit tragedy.”
He says he saw the family Sunday morning at church before they left for Schlitterbahn.
He asked that for now, the public give the family space and time to heal.
The Kansas City, Kansas Police department also released details about Schwab's death early Monday evening.
According to a press release, Schwab was one of three passengers riding in a boat on the Verrückt water slide. They were notified of the incident at approximately 2:30 p.m. by an off-duty officer working at Schitterbahn.
"The Kansas City, Kansas Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene and located Caleb Schwab, 10 years old, dead from a fatal neck injury at the end of the ride, in the pool," the press release stated.
The other two passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated at area hospitals.
The incident is still under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department’s Major Case Unit. They are encouraging anyone with information to call 913-573-6030.
