Memorial service on MU campus honors Newtown victims

More than two hundred people took part in a short memorial service on the University of Missouri campus this afternoon to honor the victims of the Newton, CT mass shooting.

The bell in Switzler Hall on the University of Missouri campus rang 26 times to honor the victims of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. MU Chancellor Brady Deaton made a short speech.

“As others have said, enough is enough. It’s time for a new direction and if that new direction doesn’t affect each of us in our homes, in our families, in the kind of curriculum we build in a university and the kind of community relationships we develop, then we have failed as a society,” Deaton said.

Deaton and his wife Anne led the more than two hundred people that attended the service on the short walk from Jesse Hall to the columns on the Francis Quadrangle, where a wreath laid to honor the victims. Many of the attendees took a moment to reflect in front of the wreath.
