Mexico Moving Forward with Downtown Revitalization

Mexico’s DREAM Initiative is continuing to make a difference in the downtown community.

by Chloe Dake (Columbia, Mo.)

Mexico’s DREAM Initiative is continuing to make a difference in the downtown community.  Mexico was designated a DREAM community in fall 2007 with planning beginning in 2008.  The DREAM initiative attempts to revive the original heritage and culture of towns in Missouri.  Local business owners in Mexico teamed up with St. Louis planners in order to create 10 tasks to freshen up Mexico’s downtown area.  Local scrapbooking supply owner Barbara Wilson says the plan is shaping up nicely.

“For Mexico it’s been very effective, its giving us…  it’s given us a framework to work from.  We have a timeline and were moving along that timeline and without this strategic plan we would have never been able to accomplish what were going to accomplish,” Wilson said.

Since the completion of the DREAM initiative four months ago Wilson says residents have seen progress in landscaping, painting, and renovations.  She says downtown is taking shape with new retail spaces being updated and leased.  She says shop owners plan to continue supporting the changes and say they look forward to seeing continued progress.
