The chairman of a Missouri panel that regulates utilities such as electric and natural gas companies is taking a job at a California utility company.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said Friday that it has hired Missouri Public Service Commission Chairman Robert Kenney as its vice president for regulatory relations. Kenney will join the company Aug. 24.

Kenney has been chairman of the Missouri regulatory panel since 2013 and a member of the commission since 2009.

In his new role, Kenney will manage company proceedings before the California Public Utilities Commission. San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric says it provides energy to nearly 16 million people in California.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon last month announced he's appointing former Democratic state Sen. Maida Coleman to replace Kenney.
