Missouri WWII Vet's Mustard Gas Claim Again Denied

Internet Archive

A World War II veteran who says he was exposed to mustard gas experiments at a former southwest Missouri military camp has had his disability claim denied again.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Arla Harrell's claim was denied by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the fourth time in 21 years.

VA Secretary Robert McDonald recently was presented with information about chemical weapons experiments at Camp Crowder near Neosho. That appears to contradict Pentagon claims it has no evidence of individual exposure to mustard gas there.

National Public Radio reported in November it had evidence 3,900 WWII veterans were exposed to mustard gas in Army experiments, six times the number the VA recognized.

Harrell's children believe his lifelong health problems, notably in his lungs, were from mustard gas.
