This week a judicial panel in Missouri released a newly redistricted mapfor the General Assembly. The new map is an attempt to represent the state’s shifting population trends in the last decade.

The state’s Appellate Apportionment Commission’s map puts two districts completely within the borders of Boone County, down from three. Missouri State Representative Chris Kelly said he is looking forward to representing new constituents, but says the House and Senate boundaries ignore something.

“A legislative district, it’s important that it represent a community, and they just ignored the concept of community entirely," said Kelly.

The reconfiguration of the 19th Senate District, currently held by Kurt Schaefer, includes Boone and Howard counties instead of Boone and Randolph. Mary Still is a representative for the 25th district in Columbia. She said she will consider running for Schaefer’s seat on the new map, one she feels represents her values.

“It’s a district with hardworking, middle-class families, and those are the people I fight for,” said Still.

The new district boundaries take effect in next year’s primary and general elections. Candidates can file starting February 28.
