Moberly Area Community College received a federal grant of $336,000 on Monday to support education in the fields of science, technology engineering and math, otherwise known as STEM.

The U.S. Department of Labor awarded the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant to community colleges across the country. The state of Missouri alone received $19.7 million to fund STEM education.

Missouri Community College Association Executive Director Zora Mulligan said this grant is important because Missouri's economy is depending on this emphasis in STEM education.

"We have an economy in the state of Missouri that has traditionally been very strong in agriculture. Manufacturing is a very strong tradition in Missouri and so we're working to make sure that the long term economy can meet its needs in terms of advanced manufacturing," Mulligan said.

This is the third part of a grant the state of Missouri has received. The first grant was awarded in 2011. The previous grants helped train workers in health services and in modern manufacturing facilities.

"We're especially excited about this grant because it's going to focus on STEM jobs, which is one of the most important factors both for our state's economy and then also in terms of an individual's long term employment prospects," Mulligan said.
