The city of Columbia hopes to develop a 30-mile trail loop around the city over the next decade.
KOMU reports that the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department envisions the interconnected trail network as part of its long-range master plan.
Park Development Superintendent Mike Snyder says the project would double the total length of city trails and could cost between $15 million and $25 million. He emphasized that the city has no detailed designs for the trails yet, and the project could take closer to 20 years to become a reality.
A city survey found that 70 percent of Columbia households use the local trail system to walk, run or ride bicycles.
