Northwest Missouri State University has adopted a policy allowing students to seek medical care for overuse of alcohol or drugs without fear of reprisal.

The Maryville Daily Forum reports the amnesty provision approved by the university's Board of Regents is meant to ensure that students get the care they need.

Though the university is a dry campus, with a strict code that bans drinking on campus and disorderly conduct due to alcohol's influence, University Police Chief Clarence Green says that intoxicated students needing medical attention often fail to get it because they fear getting into trouble.

Administrators say the amnesty won't spare students from possible problems with law enforcement if they commit crimes.
