The number of reported thefts from motor vehicles has increased since this time last year, according to a Columbia Police Department news release.

Between Jan. 1 and Friday, there have been 655 reports of theft from vehicles — that is 207 more reports than this time last year. The uptick in car break-ins was a topic of concern at a Building Stronger Beats community meeting earlier this month.

Due to the rise in thefts, patrols will increase throughout the city.

Overall, about $330,000 worth of property has been stolen so far this year.
Of the reports this year, 99 include the theft of a gun or a firearm accessory. Most of these guns were stolen from the glove compartment or the center console, according to the release.

On Oct. 13, six guns and multiple cases of ammunition were stolen from locked vehicles. The thieves broke into vehicles on Stadium Boulevard between Rock Quarry Road and Goodwin Pointe Drive, according to the release.

Police said such thefts have happened throughout Columbia.

Most of these incidents were opportunistic since a large bulk occurred when a vehicle was left unlocked, according to the release.

The department offered these tips to avoid break-ins:

  • Not leaving firearms inside of the car (but if you do, make sure they are in a lockbox, not the glove compartment);
  • Removing or hiding all valuables (do not leave valuables in the glove compartment or the center console);
  • Rolling up windows and locking doors.

If you see any suspicious activity, please call the department's non-emergency line at 573-442-6131 or report a crime online here.
