The Osage County Sheriff was arrested on Wednesday for the unlawful use of a weapon. According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, Michael Dixon, Jr. negligently handled a loaded handgun while he was intoxicated at the Hitching Post bar in Hartsburg.

Dixon was charged with harassment in 2013. Osage County presiding commissioner Dave Dudenhoeffer said he and other commissioners called for Dixon to resign after the harassment charge, but he did not leave his position.

“People aren’t happy, but we’ve been fighting this for a couple years,” Dudenhoeffer said.

Since the Osage County Sheriff is an elected official, the commissioners could not force Dixon to resign.

Dudenhoeffer said if Dixon is convicted of this charge, the commissioners will likely ask for him to resign again.

Dixon’s term ends at the end of 2016. The Osage County Sheriff’s Department would not comment on Dixon’s arrest.
