Rock Bridge, Hickman High Schools cancel joint homecoming parade

Rock Bridge High School and Hickman High School changed their homecoming tradition this year due to a big weekend for MU.

Both Rock Bridge and Hickman canceled their joint homecoming parade on Oct. 13. The schools expect a large crowd downtown because MU plays No. 1 Alabama, and continued construction on Broadway. Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Chris Belcher says safety of the students is the main reason for the cancelation.

“Whenever I am faced with a decision and there are safety issues, I always consider that with top priority," Belcher says. "So with what was going on downtown and the construction, we just figured that it was the right time to do this.”

Belcher says there has been less attendance at the parade each year and with Battle High Schoolin the picture next fall, the tradition is bound to change. Students at both schools will still participate in their other homecoming events, in addition to MU’s parade.
