The Second Baptist Church will continue to use more than its faith to celebrate remaining open for 150 years.

The church held its 150 anniversary celebration this past weekend. The church used African American gospel music and its history to celebrate how long the church has been running.

Director Fran Tibbs said God was the creator of the show’s format.

“When he gave me the vision he helped me with it. He prepared me for it,” she said. “He is always saying write the vision, make it plain, and tonight that’s what I did. I had the vision, he wrote the vision and I made it plain for him. So I praise God for that.”

The show took its audience on a historical timeline journey through music. Some Columbia local artist began by performing slave songs and ended with modern African American gospel music.

Performer Syreeta McNeal said she enjoyed how many audience members came from different backgrounds.

I think it’s a great thing, one, especially in terms of the diversity of the audience,” she said. “You had people get a chance from the educational background, the community, as well as even church to get a chance to see, kind of like, what we do and how we praise the Lord.”

Some Columbia residents joined in on the celebration fun. They clapped and sung along to songs.

Pastor Clyde Ruffin said the church will continue the celebration into July.
