Segment 1: The former mayor of Wichita discusses the changes he'd make as govenor.

Democrat Carl Brewer served as the first African-American mayor of Wichita from 2007 to 2015. Now he's campaining to be the first African-American governor of Kansas. Today, he joined us for a conversation about the education budget, restructuring taxes and expanding Medicaid.


Segment 2, beginning at 24:40: Kansas City police are changing how they interact with the mentally ill.

At least 25 percent of 911 calls are related to a mental health crisis, says Sgt. Sean Hess, head of Kansas City Police Department's Crisis Intervention Team. To give people suffering from mental illness the resources they need while keeping them out of jail, law enforcement and mental health activists are working side by side.
