Sen. Claire McCaskill takes on Dr. Oz

  Last week there was lots of talk about a hearing in which Dr. Mehmet Oz met his match in U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.). She's the chair of the Consumer Protection Committee.  Oz went before the committee to testify on the marketing of "miracle" weight loss cures. Missouri School of Journalism professors Jim Flink, Mike McKean and Amy Simons discuss the issue.

Sen. McCaskill had no patience for Dr. Oz's 'flowery language' during a Senate sub-committee hearing. 

According to an article by The Kansas City Star, McCaskill grilled Oz about his endorsement of several diet scams.

I don't get why you need to say this stuff when you know it's not true... Why would you cheapen your show?

Missouri School of Journalism Professor Mike McKean said just because Oz is a doctor doesn't mean he gives a reliable medical recommendation. 

[Dr. Oz] is really a TV personality. Good for Senator McCaskill for pointing out the impact for good and for bad that people like him can have.
