Southeast Missouri County Coroner Doesn't Plan to Resign Following Felony Convictions

Perry County, Missouri

The corner in Perry County has no plans to leave office, even though he has been convicted and sentenced for felony crimes.

The Southeast Missourian reports that Perry County Coroner Herbert Miller says he will not resign and is filing an appeal of his conviction. He was sentenced Friday after his Oct. 16 conviction for financial exploitation of an elderly or disabled person and theft of $25,000 or more. In addition to probation, he must pay $80,000 in restitution.

Missouri statute requires the removal of any office holder convicted of a felony. The Perry County Commission is asking the Missouri attorney general's office to remove Miller. For now, he will continue to draw his $15,479 annual salary.

Miller has been coroner for 20 years.
