St. Louis native elevated to cardinal

Pope Benedict XVI is elevating St. Louis native Timothy Dolan to Cardinal.

By Joseph Leahy (St. Louis, Mo.)

Dolan grew up in the St. Louis suburb of Ballwin and attended high school at St. Louis Preparatory Seminary South. In the early '90s Dolan became vice rector of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. He says his new post makes sense given his roots.

"When I was growing up in St. Louis there were two great Cardinals. The first was Stan Musial. And I have to admit I wanted to be like him. And the second was the Archbishop of St. Louis - Joseph Cardinal Ritter. So, the word 'cardinal' growing up when I was a kid was associated with giant towering figures."

Dolan served as St. Louis's auxiliary bishop in 2001, then went on to serve as Archbishop of Milwaukee, and later to New York where he is currently Archbishop.

Choosing the church's next pope will be among Dolan's new duties when he officially becomes Cardinal in February.
