Below the overview of the district are links to KBIA's coverage of Columbia 93 district schools, updated as more stories are published. Columbia 93 at a glanceThe Columbia 93 school district currently includes 32 different schools. In 2014, the district had a k-12 enrollment of 17,204 students, which is 2% of the total k-12 enrollment for the state. Enrollment has been slightly increasing in recent years, 2% since 2011. While a small percent, that amounts to almost 400 more students. There have also been major re-drawing of attendance areas with the addition of Battle High School. The Columbia Public School district is training students to respond to active shooters on school grounds.

The Lange Middle School Cinema Club created an instructional video that demonstrates the "A.L.i.C.E" active shooter response method. A.L.i.C.E stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Escape. This new procedure teaches students that in certain situations it may be necessary to counter the intruder.

Columbia Public Schools spokesperson Michelle Baumstark says the video teaches students the best practices for situations involving intruders.

“In some situations, it may be that there needs to be another tactic to get out of the room rather than sitting under your desk as a sitting duck,” she says.

The training video shows students throwing objects and tackling the gunman. The cinema club teacher John Horton says the video trains students in a way that does not scare them.

“We worked with Officer John Warner and the people at Response Options who created A.L.i.C.E. to make sure that we covered everything in the way that A.L.i.C.E. would have us do it and presented it in a way would hopefully be a little bit humorous and more geared toward a middle school audience," Horton said.

Baumstark says all secondary school teachers have received active shooter training and the district is in the process of training all secondary students.
