Thinking Out Loud: Forever Celebrating Emancipation

Tawny Brown and her daughter M'Jai Watkins were recent guests on Thinking Out Loud.

It took over two years for word of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach slaves in Texas. Over 150 years, residents of Boonville have annually celebrated the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's 1863 executive order that freed America's conscripted blacks.

Boonville's Sumner School is the home of the Concerned Citizens for the Black Community.

Tawny Brown is the president of Concerned Citizens for the Black Community. She was guest on this week's Thinking Out Loud. Brown shared the history of the group and looked ahead to this year's celebration scheduled for August 5 in Boonville.

Rain gardens make use of existing wet spots in a landscape. A St. Louis-based expert on rain gardens is Scott Woodbury. The Shaw Nature Reserve horticulturist was a guest on this week's Thinking Out Loud discussing where to site a rain garden and favorite plantings.

Trevor serves as KBIA’s weekday morning host for classical music. He has been involved with local radio since 1990, when he began volunteering as a music and news programmer at KOPN, Columbia's community radio station. Before joining KBIA, Trevor studied social work at Mizzou and earned a masters degree in geography at the University of Alabama. He has worked in community development and in urban and bicycle/pedestrian planning, and recently served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Zambia with his wife, Lisa Groshong. An avid bicycle commuter and jazz fan, Trevor has cycled as far as Colorado and pawed through record bins in three continents.
