True False co-founder documents the stories behind the music of Branson, Mo.

Missouri Division of Tourism

After an award-winning festival run, the film "We Always Lie to Strangers" will air at Ragtag for a week-long run.

David Wilson, local filmmaker and co-founder of the True False Film Festival, collaborated with MU grads AJ Schnack and Nathan Truesdell to create his first feature film. The film takes place over five years and follows four families who work in the entertainment industry in Branson, Missouri.

“I realized that my mental image of Branson mostly came from stereotypes, jokes from the Simpsons and stuff like that," Wilson said, "and so I wanted to do something that went deeper than that."

"We Always Lie to Strangers" received Special Jury Prize for Directing at the 2013 South by Southwest Film Festival. After screening at numerous festivals and premiering in Branson, Mo. last week, Wilson is ready to see it shown in Columbia.

“I can’t imagine anything more exciting than getting to show my film at Ragtag, a place that I helped make and to my hometown,” Wilson said.

"We Always Lie to Strangers" will screen Friday, May 2, 2014 at Ragtag Cinema. Before the first screening at 6 p.m., one of the families featured in the film, the Lennon Family Singers will perform.
