An investigation is still underway after a seven vehicle collision on I-70 Tuesday morning left two people dead and five injured.

The collision occurred when a westbound 18-wheeler crossed the median and crashed into another 18-wheeler going the opposite direction. This resulted in a series of other crashes involving a total of three tractor trailers, three pickup trucks, and one SUV.

“Right now we do have a couple vehicles that have been removed, however we do still have two semi-trucks that are here, and a pickup truck and trailer that was being pulled by a pickup truck. There’s still oil across the roadway and debris. We’re going to be out here for a while just cleaning this up,” Highway Patrol Officer Scott Wright said.

Wright said only one eastbound lane was operating as of 3:00 p.m. and traffic has been backed up since the accident occurred at 9:15 a.m.

“We are seeing some problems in the westbound lane with people slowing down trying to look at the scene, so anyone that comes through the area, we just want to make sure that if you’re traveling westbound that you continue on with your destination,” Wright said.

Wright said those injured during the crash were taken to University Hospital. The condition of those injured is currently unknown.
