University of Missouri holds talk to educate students and faculty about new Title IX policies

The University of Missouri continued its efforts to raise awareness about the new Title IX policies that are being put in place.

Friday’s talk at Memorial Union was led by University of Missouri’s Title IX investigator Salama Gallimore.  The hope of the Title IX office is that the more people who know the rules, the fewer people will violate them.

“Instead of playing defense and investigating and addressing reports, we want to get out there and educate the community like we did today about our policy initiatives,” Gallimore said.

While the policies are not yet finalized, the Title IX office has spoken with over 1,000 students and faculty members since the start of the school year to try and educate everyone on campus.  The plan is to roll out the finalized policies at the UM System Board of Curators meeting on October 2nd and 3rd

Part of the education process will be online videos teaching how to spot Title IX violations as well as the new mandatory reporter program.

“All MU employees are mandatory reporters and that includes TA’s, GA’s, and Student employees,” Gallimore said.

That means anyone who sees or hears of a Title IX violation is now required to report it to the Title IX coordinator where it can be investigated and handled by the correct group.  The exceptions to the mandatory reporter program are those bound by confidentiality on campus, including the RSVP Center and psychologists who speak to students.

The Title IX office plans on continuing to speak to groups on campus throughout the year as well as making people aware about the website with training once the new policies are finalized.
