Wealthy Donors Pump $3M to Missouri Candidates in Last Blitz

Donors gave about $3 million to candidates on the final day of unlimited political giving in Missouri.

The most recent campaign contribution reports show donors gave roughly $3.2 million to state candidates and elected officials in a last-minute blitz Wednesday.

Nearly $1.6 million went to Republican Gov.-elect Eric Greitens. Members of the Humphreys family gave Greitens and Republican Attorney General-elect Josh Hawley each $1 million.

Wednesday was the last day donors could cut six-figure checks to candidates before new voter-imposed campaign contribution limits of $2,600 per election kicked in Thursday.

Voters approved the limits Nov. 8. That gave donors a month to continue funneling unlimited amounts of cash to political candidates before the new constitutional amendment was enacted.

Opponents filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking to strike down the new limits.
