Missouri scores poorly on preventing falls among older adults. What can we do?

Missouri leads the country when it comes to the prevalence of injuries due to falls among older adults. What can be done to change this?

Missouri leads the country when it comes to the prevalence of injuries due to falls among older adults. The injuries can cause lost independence and mobility, and result in considerable medical bills.

One in four adults age 65-plus will fall this year. Why this problem is most acute in Missouri is not exactly known.

On Wednesday’s St. Louis on the Air, host Don Marsh discussed risk factors and how to prevent falls.

Suggestions on how to prevent falls included:

  • Install grab bars, handles, etc. throughout the home and especially in the bathroom.
  • Have appropriate flooring. Are area rugs a help or a hindrance?
  • Get an eye exam every year and keep prescriptions up to date?
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Take Vitamin D supplements if there’s a deficiency.
  • Exercise that includes various strength and balance activities.
